Double Edged Damscus Battle Axe

Hi All:

I've been inspired by all the axe building that has been occuring on the forum I frequent: http://www.Bladesmithsforum.com. I thought I'd give it a try.

Here's my first attempt. It's around 240 layers of random pattern damascus. Copper fittings, ironwood handle with micarta spacers. The shaft is of W1 and the pommel is mild steel. Both are blued.

This was easier than I thought it would be in many ways, and harder in ways that I didn't expect. I learned a lot building it.

I think the biggest mistake I made on this project was that I didn't make the blade shapes dramatically different. The sides look too similar, so I've been told a couple of times ("Uh, you know that the sides don't match, right?"). . . . I did that on purpose. Honest. . . LOL. In the original design I had a copper plate riveted to the "rear" blade (the slightly smaller blade with a greater degree of "hook" to the bottom), but it didn't quite work out.

Anyway, I hope you like it. You can find some WIP photos here: Forum Thread.

Cheers!
